Udupi, Aug 6:
The public in large numbers held a rasta roko at Mundkur which falls under the Udupi constituency of the newly-elected chief minister Sadananda Gowda, here on Friday August 5.

Mundkur lies on the border of Udupi constituency and the Nanilthar-Sankalakari stretch (proposed Atrady-Bajpe road) near Shree Durga Parameshwari temple and Jarige Katte Kadandale road are in a dilapidated condition.

Asphalting was done 13 years ago, after which not even patchworks were carried out, the protestors alleged, adding that the roads have become unmotorable and pose danger to commuters. The villagers sought the help of vehicle drivers and Mundkur gram panchayat members to organise the rasta roko.

The protestors demanded a visit by Udupi tahsildar at the protest venue, and later PWD engineers Rajendra and Sunder arrived and listened to their woes. The officials said that a proposal of Rs 4.5 crore for the development of Nanilthar-Sankalakari road has been sent to the department concerned, and assured that after the end of the rainy season road repair works will be initiated.

Not satisfied with the assurance of the engineers, the protestors demanded an immediate patch work on the roads to make them commutable. The engineers agreed and said that work will start from Monday August 8. The protest lasted for an hour.

Local bus owners, rickshaw, tempo, car, tourist vehicle owners took part in the rasta roko. Mundkur gram panchayat president Ratna and members Sathyashankar Shetty, Vinaykumar Shetty and retired panchayat secretary Avil D’Souza led the protest. A memorandum was submitted to the Udupi deputy commissioner.

In entire DK roads particularly in villages are not good and vehicle commuters have compromised for daily routine.Non of the people representatives are serious about peoples plight.
Last year Padubire Karkala road was having the same problem and people resorted to agitation by blocking the road fully for all.Only such actions could bring the authorities to senses.

Dear Readers, nothing is going to happen on roads for the next couple of years!, the reason is

State Government life span is 22 Months, and is already busy in grouping, power placy actions, and whoever will be the PWD minister and if he is from differnt district and if he is from Eshwarappa Gang, then forget...there cannot be any hopes on State Highway Improvements in DK and Udupi Districts !

Central Government already engaged in Scams and is afraid on new spending.. also there is no Congress MP representing from DK or Udupi District... so forget any expectation on National Highway Imrpvements! Moreover, NH require land acquistion for widening, and present political strategy is to be away from this action..

A classic example in Guruvayankere is, from past One year or more...in G-kere to Uppinangadi Road we are protesting almost once or twice in a month, nothing is happenning..Some Crores are spoken on news papers and it seems they are already spent!... and if you see the roads are dammared like "Neeru Dose". At Sunkadakatte, a big crack developing from a year on National Highway 73... several news paper, and media exposed this... even today nothing is happenning!

Is that DK and Udupi Districts are suffering from Political curse?

What a joke Sir Gowda has so many residences in India, one in Kakkunje Kallianpura so all people belong to LVT area should make a Rasta Roko, as its just less than a Kilometer from Highway 66 aka NH17. If all people make such claims i think most of the roads in state will develop.Jai Karnataka
