Media Release

Mysuru, Aug 21: The Konkani Christian Association (KCA) of Mysuru celebrated Konkan Manyata Divas on Sunday August 20 at their prominent Konkan Bhavan, Mysuru, in commemoration of inclusion of Konkani Language in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution on August 20, 1992.

The programme began with three priests concelebrating the Konkani Mass with great fervour and ardour which was followed by a public function. Walter Nandalike, managing Director of Daijiworld, Mangaluru, was the chief Guest. His speech inspired the gathering with the need to uphold the Konkani language and advised the younger generation to spread it further through their career choices at government entities.

Monetary medical support was rendered to the sick patients and the less privileged, educational support was provided to economically challenged students and a tricycle was donated to the paraplegia person irrespective of caste or creed.

The KCA honoured eight dignitaries who have rendered self-less service over the years for the unity of the Konkani people and the enrichment of Konkani culture. The dignitaries were Dr Richard Picardo, John Joseph Pinto, Vincent Noel Crasto, Gracian Rodrigues, Pius Saldanha, Nelson Lobo, Nelson Coelho, and Edwin Pinto. Konkani youth entertained the audience with their enchanting cultural programme.

John D’Souza, president of KCA welcomed the gathering. The report was read by the general secretary Joyce Sequeira, Anil Saldanha, treasurer, distributed the cheques to the students, poor and the needy. Stany Lobo, vice president, proposed the vote of thanks and Meena Dias, vice president, compered the programme. Konkani residents of Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Kodagu and Mandya districts attended the celebration, which ended with a sumptuous dinner, provided by the association.

Konkan and Konkani are inseparable. Konkan region is the cradle of Konkani language. Konkan Railway is named after the region, i.e. the coastal belt stretching from Mumbai to Mangalore.
