Udupi, Aug 23: The election for the posts of president and vice president of Shirva gram panchayat took place on August 23, resulting in the victory of Congress candidates Savita Poojary and Wilson Rodrigues as president and vice president respectively.
The president's position was reserved for a backward class woman, while the vice president's position was reserved for the general category.
With a total strength of 34 members, the Shirva gram panchayat comprised 20 Congress members and 14 BJP members. Savita Poojary, contesting for the role of president, secured 20 votes, while her opponent Asha Achary received 14 votes. In the vice president category, Wilson Rodrigues garnered 19 votes, while his rival Rajesh Shetty received 15 votes. Notably, one vote for the vice president's position was cast in favor of the opponent.
Overseeing the election process was Udupi PWD assistant engineer K P Girish. The event witnessed the presence of key figures, including gram panchayat PDO Anantapadmanabha Nayak, Kaup Block Congress President Navinchandra Suvarna, Prashanth Jathanna, Sunil Bangera, Sharfuddin Shaikh, Ignatius D’Souza, Youth Congress president Melwin D’Souza, former gram panchayat president Hasanabba Shaikh, K R Patkar, Ratan Kumar Shetty, vice president Gracy Cardoza, and other gram panchayat members.
