Mangaluru: African swine flu in Kerala – Special monitoring in Dakshina Kannada

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Aug 25: Necessary precautionary measures are taken in Dakshina Kannada district to avoid spreading of swine flu which is confirmed in neighbouring state of Kerala.

African swine flu is an epidemic that spreads from domestic as well as wild pigs. Swine die due to this disease. There is no definite vaccination available for this flu. The only method that is followed is to cull the pigs in and around one km area of the spot where the flu is confirmed. It causes huge financial loss for pig farmers.

Animal husbandry officials said that so far no incidents are reported in Dakshina Kannada. However, strict vigil is kept on check posts of Talapady, Jalsoor and Saradka which are on border to Kerala. Pork is sent to Kerala in huge quantities from Dakshina Kannada. The vehicles that are returning after supplying pork to Kerala are sprayed with chemicals. Monitoring is also done on pigs and pig transportation. All veterinary doctors are advised to visit the pig farms in their area and give suitable advice to pig farmers.

District health officer Dr Kishore said, “African swine flu is seen only in pigs. It does not spread to human beings. Many have confusion in this regard. Those who do pig farming locally should seek precautions from animal husbandry department.”
