Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Aug 26: Coastal region, which receives highest rainfall in the state is facing severe shortage of rain this year. There is no forecast of rains also in near future. State government has identified 113 taluks of the state as drought hit including Mangaluru.

Karnataka state natural disaster in-charge centre has released the list based on the rain that is received from June 1 to August 19. Accordingly, Mangaluru taluk of Dakshina Kannada district has around 20% rain deficit. Though other taluks of the district also have rain shortage, Mangaluru is added based on dry weather for more than three weeks, shortage of humidity, underground water index, storage in dams and inflow of water in rivers.

In the past too there had been deficit rains but drought like situation never occurred. In future recurring droughts in summers will be due to diversion of Nethravati River. Shortage of rains is an excuse.

The changing weather patterns have to be closely monitored by all govt bodies , corporations , farming and fishing community. This yr IMD announced "Normal Monsoons" some time in April 23. Which is quite mysterious when most other weather watch agencies announced possible drought like monsoons due to a variety of factors Involving Indian Ocean dipole ,el nino effect ,the effect of arctic winds making our winter bit more colder this yr. The close monitoring together with water preservation must be done to avoid mainly water deficiency in our locality. This will be pattern in times to come.India will struggle to keep its cities going ,it's farms will shrivel if attention is not paid to anomalous weather and water preservation. Writing is on the wall ,but people r bothered more by politics and other time pass.

In reality it should be much more than 20%; this will have a profound broad-based effect next year!! We have to brace ourselves for the worst possible scenario; potable water will soon become a PRECIOUS COMMODITY!!

But sad to see that we have no awareness on water preservation, rain water harvesting. Until it starts to rain, we cry for water and when rainy season starts, we forget everything and we start to cry again when next summer approaches

Please don't assume and presume; I have been predicting this scenario since the last two years including the solution for this! FYI, on my part, I am a very very frugal water user; that's the maximum I can do given my status as a common citizen!
