Mangaluru, Oct 20: In a strange occurrence, a peacock visits Sri Subramanya temple at Neermarga Manur on the outskirts of the city every day and dances with joy. The temple priest has tied anklets to its legs. The same peacock used to visit the home of the temple priest every day earlier and dance in front of the family members.

Many devotees of the temple wait to witness the dance of the peacock every day. The dance of the peacock makes the devotees forget themselves. The peacock dances during day time in the temple and goes to the house of the temple priest in the evening.

The video of the dancing peacock has gone viral on social media.

We have lost our touch with nature. Peafowls are an invasive species in South Canara and Kerala. Just check with someone in their 80s or 90s if they saw even a single peacock in their childhood. These are native if deciduous forests and scrubland. They spread out once native evergreen forests were cleared as these birds hate evergreen forests owing to their limited flight. The native snakes have taken a beating. The needless protection that these birds have got being the national bird has now made them the NATIONAL PEST for farmers.

We see this kind of acts by peacocks in many rural areas, and even in the suburban areas like Thannirbavi and all along the coastal area. The fact is that these birds have lost their natural habitat and they come to the human habitations to find their food. Any farmer will tell you.
