Travis Head smashes gutsy ton as Australia beat India to win cricket World Cup 2023

Ahmedabad, Nov 19 (IANS): Opener Travis Head smashed a sensational century (137) in the final of the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 as Australia defeated India by six wickets to lift the coveted trophy for the sixth time here at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Australia bundled out India for 240 in 50 overs courtesy of Mitchell Starc's three wickets and two each from Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood. In response, Head slammed a gutsy ton to steer the Team from Down Under to a comfortable win over India.

Marnus Labuschagne played a sluggish innings as he scored 58 in 110 balls but the knock proved to be a great assist to Head, who went all guns blazing against the Indian bowlers. Head also became just the second player to hit a century while chasing in a World Cup final.

Despite a challenging start for Australia, losing early wickets to Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, Head and Labuschagne's partnership turned the tide in Australia's favour. Head's impressive century, his fifth in ODIs, powered Australia past India's target with ease.

Australia started their campaign with two straight losses but bounced back in style with seven wins in the league phase before winning the semifinal against South Africa in Kolkata and the summit clash against India on Sunday.

With this win, Australia have now won the men's ODI World Cup crown six times, having previously triumphed in 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2015.

Chasing 241 in the final showdown, Australia got off to a blistering start smashing 15 runs in the very first over. But Shami removed David Warner in the second over as Australia lost their first wicket.

The ball swung away from Warner as he tried to drive, edging it to slip and Virat Kohli made no mistake. Meanwhile, Mitchell Marsh counter-attacked with a six and four as Australia went past the 40-run mark in four overs.

The crowd roared once again as Bumrah dismissed Marsh in the fifth over, reducing Australia to 41/2. The pacer bowled a wicket-maiden as India bounced back in the game with two wickets in the Power-play.

In his next over, Bumrah struck once again with a peach of a delivery that caught Steve Smith in front of the stumps. The impact was outside the stump but the batter did not review the decision, leaving Australia at 47/3 in the seventh over.

Head and Marnus Labuschagne then took Australia to 93/3 in the next 10 overs. Soon the duo completed the 50-run partnership with Head leading the chase. The left-handed batter hit a fifty.

In the 27th over, Head and Labuschagne's partnership went past the 100-run mark as Australia got close to 150. India did review an LBW call against Labuschagne but the batter survived as the DRS ruled it as an umpire's call.

Head then smashed his second century of the World Cup 2023 as the game slipped out of India's hands. This was Head's fifth century in the ODIs. In the end, it was too much to ask for, as Australia comfortably chased the target in the 43 overs, winning the match with 42 balls to spare.

Earlier in the day, Australia's bowling masterclass helped the side restrict India to 240 all out in the allotted 50 overs. Rohit Sharma gave India a blazing start, but Australia made a comeback with regular strikes to put the hosts on the back foot.

Brief scores:

India 240 all out in 50 overs (Rohit Sharma 47, Virat Kohli 54, KL Rahul 66; Mitchell Starc 3-55) lost to Australia 241/4 in 43 overs (Travis Head 137, Marnus Labuschagne 58*; Bumrah 2-43) by six wickets.

I love india..but Australians deserved this sucsess....Earlier australian captain pat cummins and top players like Mitchell stark...disagreed to play for IPL telling they are more focussed on national team matches thus rejecting offer of 1.5 million$....this shows true patriotism...unlike the money chasing indian cricketers with annual income of over 100 to 200 crores for doing nothing.....too much hype for this game and its players....and Australia showed the right place.....even this match was conducted in ground of our great mastermind to mark his ego permanently by naming the stadium to himself..

Winning or losing are the two sides of the Coin and we need to be gracious as losers . There is no denyimg that the Australians were professional in their approach and they exuded confidence. We have already experienced a World Cup loss at the same hands in 2003 and the mistake at that point in time was just stickimng to the same playing eleven . In fact it was by the chance injury to Hardick that paved the entry for Shami and if someone else were injured them probably Ashwin would have gained entry as well and turned the tide . Its obvious that the Team Selection did not think beyond 12 to 13 FIXED Players and there were some great younger Batsmen and Bowlers who have had a more than decent record in Ranji and IPL and should made the cut.The fielding was also poor except for a few in the Indian sdie. Moreover there really was no hunger amongst the players to win the Tournament as was displayed by the Australians . Our Cricketers are all great stars and have amassed wealth beyond limits and winning or losing makes no difference.Only Money matters now with the exception of a few players. Take leaf from the Aussie Board ...Are there any politicians involved. Having so many good Stadia and various pitches at their disposal the ultimate selection of the Venues as well as the type of Pitches prepared left much to be explained . The pitches over whelmingly supported the Batsmen and Bowlers were kickede around and made to look like ball boys. Well hats of to the Aussies whio have been around for over 150 years and their professionl approach and atheltiscm and never say die approach was visble throughout theTournament. The better team deservedly won !

In terms of crowd participation this was not a world cup with global participation -- atleast from cricket playing countries -- --as spectators were all Indians -very few from outside -- At the same time very many private jets -- vip tickets -- corporates -- film stars -- Gurus -- other charlatans were found in cheering -- many may not know ABCD of cricket -- but free loaders -- the game of cricket lost a lot of shine -- of course with politics getting into cricket this is inevitable -- incl advertising menace -- endorsements etc --

Even the organizers joined in harassing the Pakistan players by getting the DJ to play religious songs just to harass the pak players even more. The crowd ‘ enjoyed’ that day. Exactly at the same venue 35 days later the crowd got a tight SLAP on their face by the loss of their team. Yesterday it looked like there was no one in the stadium😂😂. Karma returns

I find it difficult to believe that India could not lift the cup after beating all the teams. It could be over-confidence as they must have thought they would beat the Aussies considering their previous victory over them. The PM & HM who came to watch the match, proved to be ‘panauti’. I cannot imagine what the godhi media was going to telecast if we had won the match. They would have definitely put Modi in the limelight than the players.

They deserved to win. Unlike our Indian players, they always and always display professionalism in their strategy and emerge numero-uno. Our players don’t play for the country - loss or win - they're assured of bountiful cash awards. Most of the players having Godfathers, adopt a care-a-damn-attitude. Furthermore, their positions have been cemented in the team. Even with their bad performance, they don't make way for other deserving upcoming players irrespective of the result. Practically all these players are treated like God. In a way, I am happy with my prediction. Finally the curtains are down.
