State govt mulling to launch sheep, goat meat outlets in line with KMF

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Nov 20: The government of Karnataka is mulling to open outlets in line with Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) to market packaged sheep and goat meat at reasonable rates.

This scheme which will fall under animal husbandry department will create employment to rural folk. Congress MLC T B Jayachandra, who is special representative of Karnataka government at New Delhi, said that the work of hi-tech slaughter house at Cheelanahalli at Shira taluk in Tumakuru is in its final stages. This slaughter house which is constructed with private agency participation is expected to get ready by January 2024.

Giving details of the scheme, Jayachandra said, “This scheme is planned in order for the sheep and goat farmers to get good price for their animals and also to provide quality meat to the public. Under this project, the animals are bought directly from the farmers. This will also increase their income. The department will put efforts to form a meat brand like that of KMF Nandini. This will also create more employment in rural areas.

“The government also has plans to produce products from the skin of goat and sheep. Officials of the department will be sent to Tamil Nadu and Amboor in Kolkata. Studies are done in these places on the products that are made out of the skins of sheep and goat,” he said.

According to a sample registration system (SRS) baseline survey, 2014 released by the registrar of India 71 per cent of Indians over the age of 15 years are non-vegetarian. Many other states will take cue from our initiative, create more employment and revenue, people will get more food options like many advance countries and it would be a big success

While I welcome the move, please have good look at your customers with deep pockets. Most of Andhra and Telangana buy Nandini ghee for all religious ceremony because they consider this ghee the purest. Whenever I bought, I found it at par with homemade ghee. I welcome KMF to indulge in mutton biz., but keep it separate from Nandini milk outlets so that the perception/reputation that is providing you revenue in the existing business is not compromised. Mutton prices are really high. Entry of KMF will provide incentives to farmers rearing Sheep, Goat, without doubt and will enable more production, yield and cost per unit sold to both producer and distributor. Consumer is the winner in the end.
