Kasargod: Bicycles create harmony, environment-friendly commutes at Udinoor govt school

Kasargod, Dec 25: In the picturesque district, Udinoor government higher secondary school stands out with a distinctive feature—90% of its students pedal to and from school. The rhythmic trin-trin of bicycle bells envelops the surroundings as the school day begins and concludes, creating a unique and vibrant scene.

For the past 25 years, this tradition has flourished, with over 1000 out of 1600 students opting for bicycles as their preferred mode of transport. Unlike many, these students encounter no traffic jams or bus delays; their trusty bicycles serve as reliable companions.

Remarkably, none of the students receive bicycles from the government. Instead, the school has witnessed numerous instances of teachers and donors generously contributing funds to provide bicycles for financially disadvantaged students. Each bicycle is distinctively marked with a permanent, tamperproof sticker, displaying a unique number.

A further contribution to the community is the responsibility shouldered by the students. During peak hours, members of the school's student union actively manage traffic, ensuring a smooth flow and gaining compliance from other road users. Motorists, too, readily follow the traffic signs directed by these diligent student traffic controllers.

The Udinoor government school has not only fostered a tradition of environmentally conscious commuting but has also become a hub of support and generosity. The absence of motor vehicles translates to a pollution-free environment, underscoring the school's commitment to sustainability and community well-being.
