Beltangady: Union govt’s approval spurs development of key highways in taluk

Beltangady, Jan 5: The union government has granted approval for the development of two highways passing through the taluk, aiming to enhance the journey experience for pilgrims and tourists visiting tourist spots and temples such as Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala and Sautadka.

Charmadi Road, the primary connecting route to other districts, is characterized by sharp bends and boasts picturesque natural beauty, albeit with heavy vehicle congestion. The union government has allocated Rs 343 crore for the development of an 11.2 km stretch of this road. The ongoing rapid road widening from Punjalkatte to Charmadi, covering a distance of 33.1 km, includes the development of the Charmadi Ghat.

The planned 44 km road development is expected to alleviate current vehicle density and traffic congestion issues. The construction will also incorporate measures to address potential landslides in the Ghat section, including the removal of dilapidated retaining walls.

The Ujire-Periyashanti road presents a current challenge for drivers and riders traveling from Bengaluru, Subramanya, and other locations to reach Ujire and Dharmasthala. The narrow road is riddled with potholes, minor bridges, and a muddy stretch between the road and footpath. This route is crucial for accessing Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala and serves as a primary connection for rural areas. The Union government has sanctioned Rs 613 crore for the development of this 28.5 km stretch, addressing issues such as minor bridges and valleys lacking retaining walls that contribute to accidents.

The primary phase surveys for both highway development stretches have been completed, and additional surveys are slated to be conducted soon, as per information provided by NHAI officials.

First let them complete 4 way highway work between Bengaluru to Mangaluru (work is going on for almost last 10 years), Kulur overbridge work, Nanthoor flyover, KPT flyover, Bikarnakatte to Karkala 4 way highway etc. Apart from these pending works, for development of Mangaluru we need expressways to Bengaluru and Mumbai. We need separate railway zone created with Mangaluru as headquarters. The current airport may have to be extended (if possible) and upgraded, to have larger aircraft like Airbus land/takeoff and also increase the number of flights. We need tourism infrastructure to be developed rapidly and also have IT/BT industries setup their offices in Mangaluru. Need to have plans to have international cricket stadium etc. Do you think these can be done before 2030 year?
