Mangaluru: DC directs operators to install doors on buses within a month

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Feb 29: The deputy commissioner (DC) issued a directive specifying that all private city buses registered since 2017 must install doors within the next month and submit an affidavit regarding the same.

Addressed the road safety committee meeting held at the deputy commissioner's office auditorium on Wednesday February 28, the DC said, “It is in the law that all buses registered since 2017 must have doors installed. All buses should strictly adhere to this regulation. Within the next month, this should be strictly implemented, and bus owners must submit affidavits as directed by the RTA.

"No compromise can be made on public safety. There is no question of tolerating negligence. There is intense pressure from the public to install doors on buses. Concerns have been expressed at public meetings as well. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and other states have also made it mandatory to install doors on buses for travel. The presence of doors in city buses in Bengaluru ensures uninterrupted public transportation. This also facilitates smooth traffic management. Hence, it will be implemented in our district as well,” he said.

Better late than never, good initiative by the DC, but given the attitude of the local bus mafia I have my own doubts about its implementation. Case in point is the shrill horns used by these drivers, apart from scaring other road users and creating sound pollution, I’ve also noticed these shrill horns are used while approaching bus stands / bays, to alert passengers, otherwise the conductor has to shout “Bigaah Bigaah balleh… porthbapundu yeh” - The police should also be strict on vehicles going on the wrong side as well as rash and negligence driving by these overspreading buses….

Why do bus conductors not issue tickets to paying passengers. No board is displayed regarding passenger fares. The conductor just quotes any amount for a ticket based on his memory. In case of a major accident, how is one to prove that he's a bonafide passenger of the bus ? Where is the insurance cover for passengers travelling by these buses ?

If this rule is being sincerely implemented by the DC with the passengers safety in mind then it's gud. He has said, " it's in the law", then he better implement it rather than sleep over it. Gud luck.

Our TrafficPolice, RTO so far failed to control the honking horn sound and overspeed, how they will obey your order. We need Government buses with doors, ( autometic open and closing systems) then only this problem will solve. In a auto if more than 3 passengers sitting our Traffic Police take action, when in a city buses clearly mentioned sitting around 35 and standing around 10 passengers, how our traffic Police allowed more than 25 passengers that too standing and nearly 10 peoples hanging on the footboard????. RULES FOR BUSSES IS DIFFERENT FROM POOR AUTORICKSHAW???? Our DC must control above mentioned points first. Continuously atleast one month he should not sit in his office and ride from morning till late night. Then regularly random check, we can control this problems.

SOME MORE POINTS OF CONCERN" 1.Shrill horns being used(each bus has two types installed, one of lower decibel will be used in city and were authorities are watching) 2. hap hazard parking (bus bays are sometimes not used when available, need designated bus bays) 3. over speeding of buses and reckless overtaking is very rampant (there are habitual offenders in some select routes) 4. the exhaust smoke in some buses including government transport buses are really a major pollutant

Good decision. But, let us wait until it is implemented. Going by our history (when rules were framed for CCTV, GPS, speed governors etc. all in the name of public safety), bus owners lobby will open its fangs and we know the rest of the story.

This decision will ensure the safety of the passengers, which should be a priority . Good move by the the DC. Just hope that it is implemented within a month by the private buses.

Along with doors, working side indicators, brake lights and horns with permitted decibel levels should be made mandatory. Drivers and conductors should also be educated on traffic rules.

The DC directs bus operators or mafia to install doors, will the DK bus operators adhere to it there lies the question. The conductors do not issue tickets to passengers, the DC only directs the bus operators but the RTO &bus operators lobby are all hand in glove. DC only a silent spectator.
