Mangaluru, Mar 20: Madan Rai, a stalwart at the renowned Woodlands Hotel in the heart of the city, has dedicated 61 years of his life to the establishment, a feat rarely seen in today's fast-paced world. Recognizing his unparalleled commitment, he was honoured with the prestigious district Rajyotsava Award for his exemplary service.

Reflecting on his early life and tenure at Woodlands Hotel, Madan Rai shared, "I joined this esteemed establishment at the tender age of 11, exhibiting a keen ability to learn and adapt. Despite starting from humble beginnings and completing my education up to the 7th standard, I embarked on my journey here seeking employment."

Reminiscing about Mangaluru in the 1960s, Madan Rai noted, "The landscape of Mangaluru was vastly different back then, with narrow roads and sparse vehicular traffic. Woodlands Hotel served simple yet hearty fare like Idli Vada and Upma, priced at a mere 20 paise and tea at 5 paise. Under the stewardship of owner Vasudev Bhat, I began as a humble table cleaner but swiftly earned recognition and was entrusted with greater responsibilities, eventually overseeing the entire hotel/lodge operations."

Recalling encounters with notable personalities, Madan Rai shared, "Over the years, I have had the privilege of meeting luminaries such as Sundaram Shetty, Vijaya Bank Chairman, Y S Hegde of Corporation Bank, and renowned film stars like Vajramani and Ambarish. Their visits during film shoots were always memorable, and I cherished the opportunity to interact with them."

When asked about the transformation of Mangaluru and Woodlands Hotel, Madan Rai observed, "In the early days, a single room cost a mere 4 rupees, reflecting the simplicity of life. As the city evolved, so did the hotel, witnessing increased patronage and expansion. Despite these changes, my loyalty to Woodlands Hotel remained unwavering, thanks to the support and encouragement from successive owners like Ramesh Bhat, Ravi Bhat, and Bhaskar Bhat."

Reflecting on his recent recognition with the district Rajyotsava Award, Madan Rai shared, "The experience was truly humbling. It was an unexpected honour bestowed upon me by Speaker U T Khader, which I attribute to divine providence."

Recounting his journey from Kasargod to Mangaluru, Madan Rai revealed, "In 1963, amidst challenging circumstances back home, I made the decision to seek employment in Mangaluru. My family's sacrifices and my father's commitment to his ideals compelled me to embark on this journey, ultimately leading me to Woodlands Hotel, where I found a sense of purpose and fulfillment."

Despite numerous opportunities elsewhere, Madan Rai's unwavering dedication to Woodlands Hotel speaks volumes about his profound attachment to the institution. As he continues to serve with unwavering dedication, his journey stands as a testament to the values of loyalty, perseverance, and humility.
