Mangaluru: Contaminated tender coconut water sparks health concerns

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Apr 10: On Monday, April 8, residents of Adyar Kannur and Thumbe areas purchased tender coconut water by the liter from the Bonda Factory of Lands Flavor in Adyar. However, on April 9, they experienced vomiting and diarrhea from morning till evening.

The tender coconut water, sold to the public at Rs 40 per liter on Monday evening, seems to be the cause of the health issues reported by those in the vicinity of Adyar and Kannur. Many individuals who consumed the water have suffered from vomiting since Tuesday. Despite receiving treatment from local doctors, three patients had to be admitted to Highland Hospital, while the remaining 12 are currently undergoing treatment at Fr Mullers and other hospitals.

Following these incidents, a complaint was lodged with the District Health Officer and the District Food Safety Officer via WhatsApp on Wednesday. Promptly responding to the complaint, both officials visited the Bonda factory in Adyar and collected samples of the raw tender coconut water for laboratory analysis.

As a precautionary measure, the entire factory was temporarily shut down and subjected to a thorough cleaning. Additionally, health and food safety officials visited the registered inpatients at Highland Hospital in Falnir on Wednesday. They gathered information about their health conditions and consulted with attending physicians to ensure appropriate measures were taken to safeguard public health.

Srisha Rai ,Adyar, well ,one is not sure how are the conditions of that factory or company ?When so many workers are there and do they follow strict rules when they comeout of toilet wash their hands as should be with soap and clean?Am not sure.May be one or more are having some vomitting and loose motions?May be self their maschine and drinking glases are not so clean due to water management? Am not sure if are a medico?Capsel and glucose. Not a good idea.I recommend a simple home medicine for such severe vomitting and loose motions .Simply take some tablespoon Peffercorn ,rost dry in a pan ,crush and boil it with cup of water for two minutes ,and drink it without any sweets. That gives a fast relief than any medical tablets. You can even rest keep it in fridge for emergency.I Had this experience as I had to travel to Germany and thin pfifi previous night ,no tablets helped me ,.was too late to stay back.and my sister in law gave me this and saved me from hell.Never drink glucose when you have such problem.Even now I follow this when I have problem with stomach.

While I see lot of people being suspicious of the accusations. Let me narrate the story from perspective of victim. Monday 08/04/2023. 15:30, I and my Cousin had a waffle cone ice-cream & 1 bottle of bonda water. At the location and mind you, the glass bottle which they provide. By night cousin was severely affected and next day he was sent back to his home for betterment. Tuesday 1 am onwards I started to experience hell. Frequent visits to toilet and severe dehydration. At 3:30 I had enough and took capsule which controls loose motion. In the day somehow drove to medical, bought additional capsule, glucose and ORS. Since then I have been on liquid diet. I still get sudden sensations like somebody is exploding dynamite in my intestine. We initially thought it might be the food from pizza place we had later, but today we got to know the source. When multiple people are affected from common source it's not accusations it's evidence. Most of the victims may not narrate their story here and it may be hard to believe such an organization maybe the cause. I am well aware of their business model and why their pricing is low. I personally would love their business to prosper. But the logic of so many people have used it before and I have never heard something bad is unusual. In such a large organization with so many employees, mistake or negligence by one or few affects a lot. Hopefully they will find the cause and fix it. Hopefully others who are suffering will recover well.

I also thought that it could be "biryani " but now from your experience it is confirmed that it was bonda water. Anyway, I wish you and all those affected a speedy recovery.

As long as corruption is there in issuing licence this will go on , fortunately no one lost his life. These things have happened in the past too when lots of people got admitted after eating fish head,a few days it made headlines and everything thing was back to normal after exchange of money .so it is upto people to take care of them selves and keep praying to God that he be kind enough to bless the food they eat

Very true Monty; the symptoms described in the news, after an incubation period of 24 hours, points towards contamination with organisms responsible for food poisoning spread through feco-oro-fecal route, and these organisms thrive and grow fast in hot climates! Unless timely rehydration and specific medications are not administered, this could lead to serious consequences, especially in small children and older people with comorbidities!!

In vomiting and diarrhea cases, the route of transmission is fecal- oral route, so one has to know that just because something is cheaper and "natural " , It does not mean it is good or safe. The price paid for treatment and the inconvenience in this case would be hundred times the price of drinking coconut water directly from the coconut.

The water given is absolutely good. The problem is you should not store it for more than two hours and I am sure if any problem if caused is not because of the bonda water but because it was stored and then had which is clearly prohibited. I am a consumer of naturals bonda water and without bias I must say they are doing a wonderful job in serving fresh and hygienic water. We should not close the store without getting to know the facts. We need more bonda water factories which serve fresh and cooling water at affordable rates

Having been to the Bonda Factory, the process there is for all to see, their Ice Cream brand “NATURALS” is quite popular, so too the quality of Coconut water that is competitively priced at ₹ 40 a litre. There seemed to be heavy rush for coconut water during the fasting month of Ramadhan that they restricted to one litre per head. Quite likely the plastic bottle that was used to take the water must’ve been contaminated or else the tender coconut water must have turned rancid if left hot in the hot and humid Mangalore summer. Bonda factory has boards displayed that the water should be consumed within a couple of hours. We’ve refrigerated it and had it after two days with no distinct change in taste or quality. Naturals Ice cream being a pan India popular brand would certainly have all SOP’s / Quality control in place as they are dealing in a highly perishable food item.

Been drinking this Tender Coconut water since ten years now. So far nothing wrong has happened. It's super clean and they maintain the highest standards of cleanliness. The entire kitchen is covered with glass for all to see. Because of the excess demand, they limited people to only 1 liter per person. This has irked many. Also, how can one be sure that it's only because of this Tender coconut water and not the food they ate, after fasting for the whole day? Also on that day many would have drank the water. How come just one fell sick? Definitely a case to be investigated thoroughly. Looks like dal Mein Kuch kaala hai.

Removing water from tender coconut if it is not by automated machines ,you should not just see the cleanliness of the place ,one should see if the employees wash thier hands properly after...... organisms I repeat are transmitted by the fecal-oral route.

Y’all need to be aware that coconut waters are not meant to be stored in any sort of steel products, just be cautious regarding all this small matters, they make a huge amount of difference. NEVER STORE COCONUT WATER IN A STEEL BOTTLED PRODUCT

@Sainz; pure SS does not react with coconut water; it will only get rancid naturally if kept unrefrigetated; drinking rancid water (no one would want to) also will not lead to the symptoms described; symptoms mentioned are highly suggestive of bacterial contamination from one of the ingredients used!!

Those who bought this so called "Bonda water" must have applied some common sense and thought that how on earth it's possible to sell genuine "Bonda water" at ₹40/L when even a small Bonda costs nothing less than₹40/Bonda (with approximately 200-250mL pure Bonda water)? With most open wells in and around the Smart City already contaminated with sewage water and the condition (heavy contamination) of Netravati river water as it flows down the Western Ghats towards the plains and into the Smart City through various points of contamination; there is also the possibility of contaminated water supplied by tanker cartel having been used to make the "₹40/L Bonda water"!! BTW; one can imagine the condition of this so called factory made Bonda water concoction (when sugar is added to untreated sewage contaminated well or river water containing deadly species of bacteria)?!!! It's shocking how the factory got all the necessary licences from the FDA to "manufacture and sell Bonda water"! BTW, only recently there was a report of how the main pipeline supplying river water to the Smart City was tampered by rogues elements to suck out water by drilling holes in the pipeline right from Firangipete onwards.... very sorry state of affairs in a region occupied by Buddivanta Jivas... worst than third...! Please note that this is a very personal opinion based on news available in the public domain and my knowledge and understanding/perception; please don't believe in anybody's personal opinion; kindly do your own research and analysis..🧐🙏🙏

Bonda Factory is in Naturals icecream factory. They use tender coconut for ice cream. they use only malai and the water was wasted earlier. Later they decided instead of wasting water, they can sell it for cheap. It was very cheap earlier like 5 Rs, 10 Rs. etc Gradually with the increase in demand they increased the price to 40. And during Ramzan, they limit it 2 liters per person since they don't want few families to buy all the water.

They dont produce bonda water. They buy tender coconut n use the pulp for making icecream. Water is extracted in a super special way. Can google n see their factory operation on YouTube. Just dont put remarks.., its famous Natural icecream factory

A chain is as weak as its weakest link. There are many videos but in the first one that I saw, a person is pouring a liquid (? coconut water) from a steel vessel into a plastic bag ( Thela). Contamination can easily occour at this point, even if extraction is in a super special way.

Drinking tender coconut water directly from the coconut is safest and healthy. Buying by the liter or glass is dangerous ice or water can be contaminated. The vendors might be using sweetner & etc.
