Udupi, May 5: A woman fell victim to an online scam where a fraudster, posing as an official from Canara Bank, swindled Rs 3.91 lakh from her account.

Thresiamma, a resident of Manipal and a customer of Canara Bank, received a call on May 4 from an unknown individual claiming to be the bank manager. The caller requested her account number, customer ID, Aadhar number, and date of birth under the guise of verification.

Unfortunately, Thresiamma also provided the OTP number and nominee details she received on her mobile. Within minutes, Rs 3.91 lac was transferred from her account by the fraudsters.

A complaint has been lodged at the Manipal police station regarding this incident.

If any call comes tell them I'll personally visit the bank and will update any documents including KYC . Secondly never reveal your Account number and absolutely no OTP. Don't keep big amount in day to transaction account. Tell them I'm busy right now and I will contact you later etc. Be aware of fraudulent methods and save your hard earned money with knowledge

I believe technical glitch in the adhaar interface with the bank along with mobile number allows huge transactions without officials authorization. Even huge amount withdrawal requires authorization from bank official. Government need fix this problem related to adhaar card glitch.

RBI need to disable otp based fund transfer facility permanently. There is a entity called NPCI which is holding all these mappings data. Software interfaces are exploited by criminals to make money. I do not know what are the other genuine use cases where otp based fund transfers are really required. This requires high level technical investigation. PLease discuss with rbi

Such type of babyish modus operandi (occurring at regular intervals) being enough to dupe people in a highly literate town like Udipi is unimaginable and demonstrates how much of computer literacy has penentrated in to the senior citizen folks, and their "absolute lack of common sense and logical thinking"; shudder to think about the uneducated people in rural and backward areas...For that matter even if one goes to any rural area and ask for any details concerned money or property matters, these poor anguta chapp people will immediately suspect foul play, and hunt you out of the house...without common sense and application of logic in real life situations, paper degrees are of absolutely no use in the modern world 😉!!
