New Delhi, Oct 18 (IANS): The strike at automobile giant Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant continued for the 12th day Tuesday with no sign of the management or workers relenting to end the stand-off.
The two sides had held talks Monday but failed to make any headway.
"The talks have started again today (Tuesday)," a senior Maruti Suzuki official told IANS. The Haryana state government is also involved in the negotiations.
Meanwhile, production has started at the Manesar and Gurgaon plants with the company bringing in temporary workers at the Manesar facility to help roll out its best selling Swift model.
"In Manesar, those workers who did not join the strike have also been employed for production," said the official.
The Gurgaon plant had managed to roll out 1,700 units Monday, down from the 2,800 vehicles it produces daily on an average.
The Manesar facility produces 1,200 units in the per day.
Some production was also started at Suzuki Powertrain India Limited (SPIL), the company which supplies diesel engines and transmissions to the automobile giant.
The workers there had halted production to express solidarity with the striking workers at the Manesar plant, crippling supplies to the auto makers Gurgaon plant.
However, parent Suzuki's two-wheeler factory continued to be shut amid a strike called by the workforce there to support the Manesar stir.
Workers at the Manesar plant went on strike Oct 7 to demand the reinstatement of 44 suspended co-workers who were not taken back after an earlier 33-day impasse with the management ended Oct 1.
Continued labour troubles and increased competition from other automakers have resulted in the Maruti Suzuki stock weakening considerably in the recent past. It fell to a 52-week low Friday.
