Kuwait, Jun 13: Between March 2021 and December 2023, over 1,600 complaints were raised by Indian labourers working in Kuwait. Most of these complaints were related to delayed salary payments, sub-standard basic infrastructure, and various forms of mistreatment.

In the recent fire tragedy in Kuwait, which resulted in 49 deaths, 40 of the victims were Indians. This has intensified discussions about the difficult conditions faced by Indians in West Asian countries, who migrate there in search of employment.

Responding to a question in parliament, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that 708 Indian migrant labourers died in Kuwait in 2022 and 2023. During the COVID-19 pandemic, 2,480 Indians died in Kuwait in 2020 and 2021. Between 2014 and 2018, a total of 2,932 Indians lost their lives in Kuwait.

Out of the 659 Indians who died in Kuwait in 2018, 24 were from Karnataka. The ministry of foreign affairs also informed that a large number of Indian labourers returned to India during the COVID-19 pandemic.
