Mangalore University to confer honorary doctorates on Dr Ronald Colaco, two others

Mangaluru, Jun 14: The 42nd convocation ceremony of Mangalore University will be held on June 15 at 12.15 pm at the campus of the university.

Honorary doctorates will be conferred on NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr Ronald Colaco, and entrepreneurs Prakash Shetty and Thumbay Moideen who have served the society in various levels.

During the ceremony, PhD will be awarded to 155 students (22 international students). In addition, 58 gold medals, 57 cash prizes and 168 ranks will also be presented.

Dr Ronald Colaco's remarkable achievements have garnered international recognition. In 2023, he was honoured with the Distinguished Fellowship Award at the House of Lords, British Parliament, London. This followed his recognition by the World Book of Records, London, in 2022 during the Indo-UK Summit at the House of Commons. He was awarded 'The Certificate of Excellence' for his extensive contributions to social, charitable, and infrastructural development in Karnataka, spanning over 25 fields.

Adding to his accolades, Dr Colaco was named the 'ASIAONE Global Indian of the Year 202' by ASIAONE Media in association with CNBC, Zee TV USA, Canada and Middle East, and ETNOW, in Bangkok, Thailand, on February 21, 2023. Previous recipients of this prestigious award include renowned figures such as Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, Pepsi CEO Indra Nooyi, and Reliance Foundation chairperson Nita Ambani.

In 2017, Times Now media, in partnership with ICICI Bank, recognized Dr Colaco with the 'Global NRI of the Year in Philanthropy' award, selected from among individuals across 110 countries.

Dr Colaco's numerous awards and honours from countries like the USA, Canada, Australia, London, Europe, the Middle East, and his home state of Karnataka, listed in the World Book of Records and beyond, total over 44 prestigious accolades. 

Dr Thumbay Moideen, the founder and president of Thumbay Group, was born in Mangaluru. Dr Moideen is a third-generation entrepreneur who expanded his family's business into a global conglomerate headquartered in Dubai. Thumbay Group operates across 20 sectors, including healthcare, education, and medical research, and employs over 15,000 people.

Dr Moideen's contributions extend beyond business; he is a patron of several community organizations and has been recognized with numerous awards, including an honorary doctorate from Amity University, Dubai, and the ‘Gulf Karnataka Ratna’ Award. He is notably the only Indian to own the largest private medical university outside India. The Thumbay Foundation, under his leadership, supports various charitable activities, particularly in healthcare and education.

Dr Moideen's journey began at 21 when he took over his family's business. Under his dynamic leadership, Thumbay Group has seen significant growth, with its hospitals and Gulf Medical University serving a diverse international clientele. Dr Moideen's vision and leadership have made him a respected global figure in healthcare and education.

Prakash Shetty is a dedicated and accomplished hospitality leader with over 25 years of experience in the hospitality and real estate sectors. He began his journey in fine dining with the launch of Banjara in 1993 and has since expanded his ventures significantly. As the founder and chairman of MRG Group, Shetty has overseen the development of a diversified conglomerate that includes boutique hotels, fine dining restaurants, resorts, educational institutions, and infrastructure companies. Goldfinch, a chain of boutique and business hotels under his leadership, is renowned for its luxury and sophisticated interiors.

Shetty is deeply committed to social causes and aiding the underprivileged, earning him numerous accolades from both state and national bodies. Notable recognitions include the Kannada Rajyotsava Award, the Best Intellectual Award in Corporate Leadership by the Global Achievers Foundation, and the Bharath Gaurav Ratan Award by the Indian Organization for Commerce and Industry. He was also honoured by the Bruhuth Bangalore Hotel Associations for his contributions to society and the hospitality industry. His restaurants are celebrated for their quality cuisine, making a significant mark in the culinary world.
