Mangaluru, Jun 17: The presence of mind of a city bus driver saved the lives of passengers and other motorists on the road on Saturday morning.
Around 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, route no. 60 bus, which operates from Kankanady to Aakash Bhavana, experienced brake failure on a downward slope near Konchady Vidya School.
Driver Glen Sequeira did not panic and was determined to bring the bus to a halt. First, he hit a scooter that was parked by the roadside to reduce the speed of the vehicle. However, the bus did not stop. Passengers in the bus began to scream in fear. Glen, maintaining his composure, turned the bus to the right and struck a road divider and speed bumps. The bus finally came to a stop after hitting the road divider. No one was injured in the mishap.
Glen said, “The bus was about to enter the downward slope road when the rubber of the brake booster snapped suddenly. I had completed two trips on the same road without any issues, but on the third trip, the brakes suddenly failed. I first hit the scooter and then the road divider to bring the bus to a halt. If the bus had continued moving forward, there could have been a major tragedy, as many students were crossing the road just ahead, along with other vehicles. By the grace of God, no one was injured. It was truly divine intervention that saved everyone.”
