Udupi, Jun 21: The National Service Scheme (NSS), Youth Red Cross Wing, Rotaract Club, and NCC Unit of Shri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management (SMVITM), Bantakal, Udupi, celebrated the 10th International Day of Yoga (IDY-2024) on Friday, June 21, with the theme “Yoga for Self and Society.” K Raghavendra Bhat and Sadashiva Rao, district in-charges of the Bharath Swabhiman Trust, Udupi, served as resource persons for the event.
Sadashiva Rao commenced his speech by emphasizing the theme of this year’s International Day of Yoga: “Yoga for Self and Society.” He described yoga as a transformative practice that harmonizes the mind and body, balances thought and action, and unites restraint and fulfillment. Yoga integrates the body, mind, spirit, and soul, providing a holistic approach to health and well-being that brings peace to our hectic lives. He highlighted the transformative power of yoga and its ability to improve mental and physical health, reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
M Sadashiva Rao and K Raghavendra Bhat initiated the yoga demonstrations with a yoga prayer, followed by a series of warm-up exercises and simple asanas, including Taadasana, Vrikshasana, Trikonasana, Bhadrasana, Vakrasana, Shashankasana, Bhujangasana, Shavasana, Pranayama, and Dhyana. The students and staff participated enthusiastically, with the yoga trainer explaining the significance of each asana.
Prof Dr Thirumaleshwara Bhat, the principal, remarked on the importance of celebrating Yoga Day among the youth and children to help them understand the significance of yoga in their lives. He encouraged the students to practice yoga and meditation regularly for a healthy body and mind. Hithashree, a third-year Data Science Engineering student, invoked blessings from the Almighty, while Ananya, a third-year ECE student, welcomed the gathering. Adithi Nayak proposed a vote of thanks, and Nidhi Patkar compered the programme. NSS coordinator Nagaraja Rao coordinated the event.
The event saw the participation of over 200 members, including the principal, vice-principal, HoDs, faculty, staff, and students of SMVITM.
