Red alert issued for coastal Karnataka on June 22-23

Mangaluru/Udupi, Jun 22: The monsoon is picking up pace in the coastal districts of Karnataka, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for June 22 and 23.

According to the IMD, more than 204.5 mm of rain is expected to fall in the coastal districts on these days. The sea waves are also anticipated to become violent. An orange alert has been declared for June 24 and 25.

On Friday, moderate rain showers were reported in Dakshina Kannada, affecting areas such as Beltangady, Bantwal, Puttur, and Sullia. Heavy rains lashed Moodbidri in the evening, while the rest of the time saw alternating periods of clouds and sunshine.

In Udupi district, heavy rains were recorded late Thursday night and early Friday morning. Intermittent rains were observed in Udupi, Manipal, Malpe, Kaup, Brahmavar, and Hiriyadka on Friday. Kundapur and Byndoor experienced heavy rainfall, leading to disruptions in electricity supply in many areas due to strong winds.
