New Delhi, Jul 8: While a regular cup of coffee may offer a slight boost to metabolism and energy levels, relying on it for weight loss can be counterproductive if not consumed wisely, says renowned nutritionist Nmami Agarwal.
In a recent social media post, Nmami explained that caffeine in coffee can help suppress appetite and increase alertness, making it a popular pre-workout beverage. “It’s low in calories and gets absorbed quickly, giving an instant energy push,” she noted.
However, she warned that excessive consumption—especially of high-calorie coffee beverages—could have adverse effects. "Too much caffeine can lead to hyperacidity, disturb sleep cycles, and raise cortisol levels, which can cause anxiety, hormonal imbalances, and even promote fat storage," she cautioned.
Nmami stressed the importance of moderation. “Limit your intake to one or two cups a day, and avoid sugary, flavoured cappuccinos or adding excessive milk and sweeteners,” she advised. Coffee intake should ideally be stopped after 3 PM to avoid sleep disturbances.
“Coffee can support weight management as part of a healthy routine, but the right dose makes all the difference,” Nmami said, adding that persistent fatigue could signal deeper nutritional deficiencies rather than a lack of caffeine.
