Milk prices 'revised' in Karnataka by Rs 2 with additional 50 ml in every pouch

Bengaluru, Jun 25 (IANS): The Karnataka government on Tuesday revised the price of milk in the state by Rs 2, with an additional 50 ml of milk added to each packet.

The revised rates will come into effect from Wednesday.

Claiming that milk prices have not been hiked, Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) President Bheema Naik said, “We are charging Rs 2 additionally for the 50 ml extra milk which is going to be added to each packet."

Accordingly, the price per litre of milk of any variety will increase by Rs 2. The most popular blue packet of 1 litre of Nandini milk will now cost Rs 44, up from Rs 42.

Speaking to mediapersons after announcing the price revision, Naik said the decision was made to avoid losses for the KMF.

He reiterated that there is no increase in the price of milk, but the extra charge is for the 50 ml of milk to be added to each packet.

He also said that earlier, 94.47 lakh litres of milk were collected from the farmers every day, which has increased to 98.17 lakh litres. Out of this, 30 lakh litres of milk are used to produce powder, and the KMF is incurring losses in this process.

Soon, the KMF will start receiving 1 crore litres of milk from the farmers, he said.

“We cannot send back the farmers and must purchase all the milk they bring to the dairies,” Naik said.

The milk price per litre in Gujarat and Maharashtra is Rs 56, in Kerala it is Rs 54, while in Andhra Pradesh it is Rs 58, he said.

“Our rate is Rs 16 less compared to the other states. There will be no price hike for any of the other Nandini products,” Naik said.

Daylight robbery. Few months ago, Rs. 2 increase but 50 ml/pack reduction. Now Rs. 2 increase & 50 ml increase. What is the total price increase? Rs. 4. And there are many celebrating this move. Do not know whether to celebrate the intelligence or feel sorry for these lactose intolerant and keto diet dependent commentators.

Hike the price of milk which is quite an important food for the kids, allot only Rs. 15 per month for the veggies in the Anganwadis which again is going to hit the toddlers and then slash the price of alcohol so that the adults screw their health. What are we looking at? Mr. CM, are we going to have any revised health insurance plans? You seem to be screwing everything up for something!!

Where our state is heading into? It doesn't make any sense if we have high price in neighboring states. Aren't we (govt.) survived until now? Stop all these freebies, we don't want these free bus, etc. schemes. Let people work hard and earn their bread and butter. Give freebies to the people who really needs it (elders/school going children's).

The reason given about increased production as reason for hike in price is a blatant lie. KMF had stopped the best version of Nandini milk - Samrudhi version(2nd from left in image above) stating production of milk had gone down. Now without making Samruddhi available they have increased the price. This is the reason there should not be monopoly. Allowing other companies such as Amul to enter Karnataka is the right step which will benefit all. People are fooled by politicians on instigating them against competition.

What is freebie anyway? Government is collecting tax from us for each and everything. And if a small portion of that tax is returned to us in the form of some welfare scheme, how does that become free? It's our right. There are number of countries across the world which collect taxes from people and in turn provide free education, healthcare, ration etc. But in our country if the govt returns the tax to taxpayers in the form of welfare schemes, the rich and the haves start vomiting their disgust towards the poor and the lower classes.
