Tulu movie ‘Dharma Daiva’ releases in Mangaluru, highlights cultural roots

Mangaluru, Jul 5: The Tulu movie ‘Dharma Daiva’, produced under the Dharmadaiva Productions banner and directed by Nitin Rai Kukkuvalli Nuliyalu, was released at Bharat Cinemas in Mangaluru on Friday July 5. The film is produced by Biliyaru Rakesh Bhojaraj Shetty.

The movie was inaugurated by lighting a lamp, with several distinguished guests in attendance. Senior drama artist Vijaya Kumar Kodialbail noted that ‘Dharma Daiva’ had already premiered both in India and abroad, receiving positive feedback. He urged everyone to watch the film and support the hardworking team.

Kanyana Kulur Sadashiva Shetty, CMD of Mumbai Heramba Industries, praised the film for showcasing the miraculous powers of Tulunadu and emphasized the importance of audience support for its success.

Devadas Kapikad remarked that ‘Dharma Daiva’ respects the daivas (spirits) of Tulunadu and introduces their power to the world. He called for the production of unique Tulu films, akin to the success of Malayalam cinema.

KPCC chief secretary Mithun Rai highlighted the cultural significance of Dharmadaiva Chavadi in Tulunadu, where people hold its verdicts in high regard. He expressed hope that more films of this kind would be produced in the Tulu film industry.

Bhagavatha Patla Sathish Shetty, who sang the title song for the film, expressed confidence that the people of Tulunadu would make the movie a success.

Other notable attendees included entrepreneur K K Shetty, Tulu movie producers’ association president R Dhanraj Patla, and various local leaders and contributors to the film. The event was compered by Likit Rai.

‘Dharma Daiva’ is now showing in multiple theatres including Roopavani, Bharat Cinemas, PVR, Cinepolis in Mangaluru, and various other locations across the region such as Suratkal, Padubidri, Udupi, Manipal, Karkala, Puttur, and Beltangady.

The film depicts the life of Tulunadu farmers, their agricultural lifestyle, and their deep connection with the spirits and deities, as well as traditional rituals like Nema, Kola, Tambila, Nagaradhane, and Daivaradhane.

Produced by young talents from Mangaluru, Udupi, and Puttur, the film is dedicatedly supported by Biliyoor Rakesh Bhojaraj Shetty. The story is written and directed by Nitin Rai Kukkuvalli, with screenplay and dialogues by Hamid Puttur. Cinematography is by Arun Rai Puttur, and music by Nishan Rai Matantabettu, a disciple of Arjun Janya. Lyrics were penned by K K Pejawar and Sumant Byladi, with renowned Yakshagana artist Patla Satish Shetty and Samanvi R Rai Nuliyalu as playback singers. The film was edited by Radhesh Rai Modappadi and Srinath Pawar.

The cast includes Ramesh Rai Kukkuvalli, Chethan Rai Mani, Deepak Rai Panaje, Roopashree Varkady, Dayananda Rai Battampadi, Bharath Shetty, Ravi Salian (Snehit), Sandeep Poojary, Pushparaj Bollar, Ranjan Bolar, Kaushik Rai Kunjadi, Deeksha D Rai, and Gratial Kaliyanda Kodagu.
