Udupi, Jul 12: Heated arguments broke out between the members of Thenkanidiyoor panchayat and villagers over the handling of the SLRM (Solid and Liquid Resource Management) unit issue.
A general body meeting of the panchayat was being held under the chairmanship of president Pushpa. During the meeting the BJP members disrupted the proceedings and refused to sign the attendance register.
Some panchayat members who supported the protestors refused to sign the attendance register. The confrontation between the protestors and the panchayat members escalated, necessitating police intervention.
The situation intensified further when the Congress members dragged BJP members out of the meeting hall.
The meeting continued after E O Vijaya arrived at the meeting. All the members who did not sign the attendance registration were sent out of the meeting hall.
During the protest, Yashpal Survarna, who arrived at the spot and addressed the officials said, “Five days ago, I had informed the panchayat officials in City Municipality to make arrangements for the disposal of waste. Dumping waste underground is unacceptable. If approval is needed for removing the waste, then why did the officials not take the consent for dumping the waste? I will provide MLA funds to clean the waste. The protest is unrelated to the general meeting."
Yashpal Suvarna urged that the residents' problems be resolved by ensuring proper disposal of waste from its current location.
