Mangaluru/Udupi, Jul 15: Heavy rains have been drenching Dakshina Kannada and Udupi coastal districts for a week, averting this year's rainfall deficit. Currently, the twin districts have received 1% more rainfall than usual for this period.
Monsoon, which arrived in Kerala on June 30, reached Karnataka on June 2 but was subdued for two to three weeks in June. However, since early July, rainfall has intensified, resulting in continuous downpours across both districts.
As of now, Dakshina Kannada has received 1309 mm of rain out of the usual 1440 mm, marking a 9% deficit. Udupi district has received 1737 mm against the usual 1705 mm, exceeding by 2%. In Uttara Kannada, 1168 mm of rain has fallen compared to the usual 1098 mm, an excess of 6%. Overall, the coastal districts have received 1313 mm of rain compared to the usual 1302 mm, indicating a 1% surplus.
According to the IMD, heavy rains are expected to continue for several more days. The IMD predicts above-normal monsoon rains this year.
