Mangaluru: Lourdes Central School observes Vanamahotsava week

Mangaluru, Jul 16: LCS observed Vanamahotsava week from July 1 to July 6 to create awareness in increasing the green cover in India by planting more trees and promoting Afforestation. The activities and assemblies were later extended till July 13.

The LCS Vanamahotsava week was inaugurated with the theme 'Let us plant a tree, let us plant a Hope'. The students presented the assembly on this topic, the pledge on making sustainable use of the natural environment and to protect all species particularly those that are rare or endangered was chanted by all the students.

A week-long assembly with different topics related to the life of famous environmentalists like Salumarada Thimamakka, Sunderlal Bahuguna and Greta Thunberg was organized by the students. Following activities were also conducted on July 5th in their respective classes.

1. For Class I-III - drawing - theme ‘Beauty of Nature’.
2. For Classes IV-V - Poster making - theme ‘Planting for the Future'
3. For Classes VI –VIII- Creative Ad Challenge - theme- ‘Organic Food'

Students actively participated in all the activities which increased awareness and love for trees. The activities helped the students to identify their talents and have in-depth knowledge about trees and nature. The celebration of this festival inculcated the value of loving nature and growing more trees.

On the occasion of finale, the members of the Eco Club organized a plantation drive in the school AV room on July 13. The resource person Shreedhar Kumar, assistant conservator of forests inaugurated the plantation drive by planting a sapling. The principal, Fr Johnson L Sequeira, vice principal Belita Mascarenhas, Gretta Menezes, the Eco Club in-charge teacher and Sowmya K were present. The resource person Shreedhar Kumar spoke about the role of trees in conserving nature and the need of saving it. He also urged the students to make a promise to plant at least one sapling on their birthdays The programme ended with an address from the principal, Fr Johnson L Sequeira who, highlighted the importance of plants and animals in day today life.

The compering of the programme was beautifully done by Mehenoor of class VIII and Shaman of class VIII proposed the vote of thanks. Reshma was the overall in charge of the programme.
