Mangaluru, Jul 19: A potentially dangerous incident was averted at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Government High School in Derlakatte when a coconut tree fell on a power line near the school gate due to heavy winds and rain.

On Friday, July 19 morning, just before school started, a coconut tree collapsed onto a power line and an electric pole, causing both to fall to the ground. Fortunately, no students were near the gate at the time. Just a minute before the tree fell, a student-filled auto-rickshaw had passed through the gate, narrowly avoiding a major disaster.

School teachers and the public quickly informed MESCOM, and efforts were made to clear the fallen tree and power lines. Due to the time required to clear the debris, children inside the school were sent home with their parents. Classes were conducted only for the students who were already inside. As a precaution, two other coconut trees near the school gate were also cut down and removed.

I appreciate the awareness of school staff and public. Steps must be taken in all educational institutions if any trees near by the electric lines.
