Mangaluru, Jul 28: St Sebastian Church, Bendur, organized the traditional day event 'Pavsa Gammat' at the Platinum Jubilee Hall on July 28. The event's proceeds were dedicated to supporting the education of Manipuri students studying at Padua College. The celebration began with a grand traditional procession. Bulls led the parade, followed by gurkars and parishioners adorned in traditional attire, all marching in sync with the rhythms of a brass band.
Vinod D'Souza, vice president of the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC), welcomed the gathering with warmth and enthusiasm. Fr Walter D'Souza, the parish priest, officially inaugurated the event by lighting a traditional stove and placing a vessel containing Patholi, symbolizing the start of the culinary festivities. Fr Walter was honoured by the parishioners for his new appointments from the Diocese level. Fr Walter addressed the crowd, emphasizing the significance of preserving traditions and fostering community bonds through such cultural events.
Members of the Youth Commission performed a specially composed song about Pavsa Gammat, written and composed by Fr Walter D'Souza. The event was enriched with dance and singing performances by the Catholic Action League (CAL), Young Catholic Students (YCS), and other parishioners, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the community.
The highlight of Pavsa Gammat was the array of traditional monsoon delicacies prepared by parishioners. The culinary delights included: Ponsa Patholi, Haldi Patholi, Pathrode, Chicken Mutlin, Pork Mutlin, Sorpatel, Variety of fish fry, Jackfruit Gario, Banana Podi, Moong ani Kirle, Chutneys, Vorne, Methi Pez, Gulia Keer and Manni. Parishioners enjoyed the food, which was a highlight of the event.
An auction of select food items was conducted to raise additional funds for the education of Manipur students at Padua School. This activity saw enthusiastic participation from the attendees.. The 'Band Vaztha Zone Nastha' dance competition provided zones with an opportunity to showcase their dancing talents. The competition was fierce yet friendly, with winners and runners-up being awarded trophies to recognize their efforts and skills.
PPC secretary Patsy Britto expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the success of Pavsa Gammat, including organizers, participants, and attendees. Eddie Sequeira skillfully managed the event as the master of ceremonies, ensuring a smooth flow of activities and maintaining the audience's engagement.
The event concluded on a high note, with parishioners taking home not only memories of a delightful evening filled with food and entertainment but also a renewed sense of community spirit and cultural pride. The Pavsa Gammat event was a testament to the power of tradition in bringing people together and supporting noble causes.
