Udupi, Aug 2: The Our Lady of Vailankanni Shrine at Kalmady, renowned worldwide for its unique boat-shaped architectural church, is preparing to celebrate its annual feast on August 15, with grandeur. This sacred occasion holds special significance as the Shrine marks several milestones in its history.
Novena prayers will commence from August 6 to 14 at 4:00 pm, in preparation for the feast. The vicar general of Mangalore diocese, Msgr Lawrence Maxim Noronha, will hoist the shrine's flag on August 6 at 3:45 pm, followed by novena prayers and a Eucharistic Mass at 4 pm.
On August 11, the bishop emeritus of Mangalorediocese, Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, will inaugurate the chariot procession of Our Lady of Vailankanni from Kalmady, a cherished tradition symbolizing community and devotion.
On August 15, B=bishop of Udupi diocese, Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, will celebrate the Holy Eucharistic Mass at 10:30 am. Additional Masses will be held at 7:30 am in Konkani, 4 pm in Konkani, and at 6 pm in English.
A fellowship meal will be served following the 10:30 am Mass, fostering community spirit and camaraderie among pilgrims and visitors.
This year’s feast promises to be a spiritually enriching and memorable event, inviting all devotees and well-wishers to join in prayer and celebration at the Our Lady of Vailankanni Shrine, Kalmady.
The shrine's iconic boat-shaped church, inaugurated in 2018, stands as a testament to faith and architectural beauty, attracting thousands of pilgrims annually. Central to its devotion is the statue of Our Lady of Vailankanni, installed on August 15, 1988, which has been a focal point for prayers and novenas.
In a momentous event, the shrine was officially dedicated and proclaimed as the diocesan shrine on August 15, 2022, underscoring its importance as a spiritual centre in the region.
