Udupi, Aug 3: Well-known geologist Dr Uday Shankar has cautioned that the Yettinahole water irrigation project, Agumbe tunnel project, and Kodachadri ropeway could increase landslide risks in the future.

Speaking at the 25th anniversary event of the Udupi District Working Journalists' Association on Saturday, August 3, Dr Shankar noted that landslides have already affected regions like the Western Ghats, Chikkamagaluru, Wayanad, Madikeri, and Ankola.

Dr Shankar explained that large machinery such as bulldozers and JCBs, used in unscientific land excavation, contributes to landslides. He pointed out that projects like Yettinahole, Agumbe, and Kodachadri disrupt natural water absorption, which dense forests typically manage by allowing rainwater to gradually feed rivers. This disruption increases the risk of landslides during heavy rains.

Highlighting Agumbe’s ecological significance, Dr. Shankar said, “Humans are triggering nature with poorly researched large constructions. Agumbe is a hotspot for various species; constructing tunnels here will lower water levels and harm biodiversity. While we cannot undo the existing damage, we can take steps to prevent further harm.”

Vinayak U Kalgutkar from the Udupi district fire department reported a rise in fire incidents this year, with 340 fire calls and 98 rescue calls. He highlighted the need for a fire station for every 50,000 people and noted plans to establish four new stations in Padubidri, Hebri, Brahmavar, and Manipal.

“Current response times are hindered by delayed public calls and insufficient resources,” he added. Kalgutkar also mentioned that 90% of fire-related deaths are due to smoke inhalation.

Rayappa, CMC Commissioner, addressed artificial flooding issues, noting that this year’s floods were less severe due to proactive measures. He pointed out that inadequate drainage in newly constructed buildings contributed to flooding and urged the public to ensure proper water flow management.

The event was presided over by Rajesh Shetty Alevoor, president of the Udupi District Working Journalists' Association, with Nazir Polya, general secretary, welcoming attendees, and Ajith Aradi proposing the vote of thanks. Umesh Marpalli, Treasurer, Kiran Manjanbail, state committee member, and other journalists were also present.
