Bantwal, Aug 12: A mother is working tirelessly to support her family. Her situation is so dire that she struggles to pay rent. She thought that if she could save on rent, she could invest in her children's education. With this hope, she sold all her jewelry and took out a loan to buy a house. But just two months after the purchase, continuous rain caused the walls of the house to collapse, leaving the family devastated. Now, the mother's lap is the only warm shelter for her three children. However, the poor woman’s long struggle to provide a secure home has turned out to be in vain, like a ritual offering cast into the water.
This is the tragic situation of Vanitha Shetty, a resident of Jarandagudde in Kallige village, Bantwal taluk.
A dream crushed before her eyes
Vanitha has three daughters, but she never felt burdened because of them. Her dream was to educate her daughters without asking for help from anyone, despite the family's poverty, and to bring them into the mainstream of society. Unfortunately, the recent heavy rains that pounded the area without respite have shattered the dreams of this determined mother. The house that was supposed to be their future’s foundation collapsed right before her eyes.
Despite losing her shelter, the cries of this mother with her three young daughters have not reached the ears of local representatives. Public outrage is growing over the lack of a humanitarian response to provide proper rehabilitation for the family. Teachers have shown their humanity by preparing petitions in the hope that some organizations or individuals might come forward to help this poor mother.
Talented children without a home
Vanitha's children, who have been receiving education despite their poverty, are talented. They are active in both academic and extracurricular activities and have earned the admiration of their teachers. The teachers, moved by the family's hardships, have offered whatever assistance they could to boost the family’s morale. The words of encouragement from the teachers have given Vanitha a glimmer of hope during this difficult time.
Constant anxiety
"The entire burden of the family rests on my shoulders. Yet, my greatest desire is to make my children well-educated and successful. I took a step in that direction by buying a home to save on rent, but it has turned out to be a misstep. Now, I am constantly worried about whether I will even be able to provide my children with a good education, given that I can't even secure a proper shelter," says the distressed Vanitha Shetty.
