Bengaluru, Aug 13: In a major relief to Karnataka, the Cauvery Water Release Committee (CWRC) has rejected Tamil Nadu’s contention that Karnataka should not wait for release of Cauvery water release till its reservoirs get filled up.

Tamil Nadu had submitted before the CWRC that the excess flow to the State from Biligondlu was due to the surplus from major reservoirs.

“This time Karnataka has released Cauvery waters only when its reservoirs are full,” the Tamil Nadu government said and quoting the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal’s order on April 3, 1992, it argued that the ‘deficiency in a week is to be made good in the subsequent week. Thus, Karnataka should not wait till their reservoirs are filled and then release the surplus’.

Karnataka, however, argued that the cumulative flow at Biligondlu as on August 11 was 153.802 tmc as against the stipulated flow of 56.73 tmc and said the ‘excess flow at Biligundlu shall be adjusted against stipulated flows in the subsequent period’.

The State had also pointed that favourable rainfall situation would continue in the balance period of monsoon so that, the farmers of both the States will be benefited.

The CWRC did not take any decision or issue directions to Karnataka and thereby turned down Tamil Nadu’s contention.
