Mangaluru, Aug 13: The New Surgical Super Specialty Building of Wenlock District Hospital constructed by Mangaluru Smart City Limited will be inaugurated on Thursday, August 15 by U T Khader, speaker of Karnataka Assembly; Suresh B S, minister for land development; Dinesh Gundu Rao, minister for health and family welfare and district in-charge along with D Vedavyas Kamath, MLA, Mangaluru South Constituency, said Dr Jacintha D'Souza, Superintendent of District Wenlock Hospital.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, August 13 at Wenlock's Superintendent office in city, Dr Jacintha D'Souza, superintendent of District Wenlock Hospital, said that, "The Wenlock District Hospital was started in the year 1848 and over the last 176 years, this hospital has been providing effective healthcare services to the people of Dakshina Kannada and the neighbouring state of Kerala. Wenlock is popular with various speciality services. Since 1954, the hospital has been collaborating with KMC Hospital, and it has been functioning in a private-public partnership with the hospital. At present, around 3,00,000 outpatients and 30,000 inpatients receive treatment in this hospital annually. As many as 10,000 surgeries are done annually, and the hospital has 905 bed facilities and has played a crucial role in providing healthcare to the poor and middle-class population."
She further added that, "A regional state-of-the-art children's hospital was built by Infosys on the premises of Wenlock Hospital. When U T Khader was the health minister, he took the initiative to develop the Wenlock Hospital with a well-equipped new medical building with 280 beds, built at a cost of 40 crore rupees. The construction of the building facilitated the sanction of Smart City grants from the central government for the construction of the surgical super speciality building."
"It was necessary to rebuild the Wenlock Hospital with new expertise, modern medical equipment, and suitable infrastructure by the direction of Smart City Ltd. A super speciality building with an area of 1,65,000 sq.ft, has a total of 7 floors and has a facility of 250 beds, and the work has been completed up to the 4th floor. The foundation stone of this surgical super speciality building was laid in December 2020, and the building was constructed at a cost of Rs 56 crore," she said.
"Wenlock Hospital is renowned for its performance in 15 departments, which have National Quality Assurance (NQAS); the pediatric department is MUSQUAN National Quality Assurance qualified. Thus, fulfilling an important social responsibility is the successful functioning of Wenlock District Hospital," she added.
