Udupi, Aug 15: The annual feast of Vailankanni Shrine of Stella Maris Church, Kalmady was celebrated with grandeur and devotion on Thursday August 15.
Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop diocese of Udupi was the main celebrant for the holy Eucharistic celebrations of the day.
In his homily, Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop diocese of Udupi reflected on Mother Mary as the Queen of Hope, a belief rooted in the faith that she was assumed into heaven. He said, "Though officially declared in 1950, the Assumption of Mother Mary has been a cherished conviction among believers since the beginning.”
Dr Lobo emphasized the importance of understanding what happens after death. “When we die, our soul stands before God for eternal life, while our body returns to the earth. Unlike us, Jesus Christ, who accepted God’s will and died for our sins, was raised to heaven with both body and soul. Mother Mary was uniquely blessed, even from the moment she was in her mother’s womb. The Holy Spirit honored and guided her throughout her mission on earth. What happened to Mother Mary will one day happen to us if we live according to God’s will and love our neighbors. Death is not the end of humanity; it is not merely about returning to dust and soil but is something far greater. Just as a good mother supports and guides her children through life, so too does Mother Mary support and guide us on our journey,” he said.
Fr Baptist Menezes, rector, Our lady of Vailankanni Shrine Kalmady thanked everyone who supported in organising the Festal Eucharistic celebration arrangements.
Donors and sponsors were honoured with blessed candles on the occasion by the bishop.
In his message Bishop Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo said, "A large number of devotees have participated in these Eucharistic celebrations. The number of visitors coming to the shrine is growing day by day. This is the only shrine in our diocese dedicated to Mother Mary. She will lead us to go to her on Jesus Christ, let us all obey His commands and receive His blessings.”
Fr Charles Menezes, parish priest Udupi and other priests from the diocese were present during the Eucharistic celebrations. Ida Dsouza, vice president, Stanly Menezes, secretary Geneview Lobo, convener 20 commissions were also present on the occasion.
