Bantwal, Aug 16: The Addur bridge over the Phalguni river, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Mangaluru Public Works Department in the Mangaluru North Assembly constituency, has been closed to heavy vehicle traffic due to the bridge losing its structural integrity. Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan had issued the order.

On August 16, DK MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, along with MLAs Dr Bharath Shetty and Rajesh Naik, held an emergency meeting with the DC at his office to discuss alternative arrangements in light of the old bridge's repairs or the potential construction of a new bridge.

The prohibition of heavy vehicles on the Addur Bridge and the resulting detours have caused significant difficulties for students, laborers, and devotees in the area. The legislators suggested that arrangements be made to allow light vehicles, particularly those used by school and college students, to use the bridge.

The delegation of MPs and MLAs also urged the DC to provide bus services on both sides of the bridge to alleviate some of the challenges faced by commuters.

The DC assured that no heavy vehicles, including trucks, will be permitted on the old or weakened bridges, prioritizing public safety. However, he promised to take necessary steps to accommodate commuters. The district administration will ensure that measures are in place to minimize public inconvenience. Bus stops will be set up on both sides of the bridge, and the Regional Transport Officer (RTO) will be instructed in a meeting tomorrow to arrange bus services on both sides. Additionally, mini-bus services will be provided for passengers needing to cross the bridge.

Expert visit planned again

The decision to prohibit heavy vehicles was based on expert advice regarding the bridge's capacity. After the water level subsides next month, experts will revisit the site to reassess the bridge's capacity and submit a report. Future actions will be based on this report, according to the DC.

The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Santosh, Executive Engineer Amarnath, and other relevant departmental officials.

Important meeting on Aug 17

On August 17, the DC or additional deputy commissioner will hold discussions regarding bus services with the RTO, PDOs of two gram panchayats, representatives of bus associations, school bus operators, and others.
