Mangaluru: Kolkata rape & murder - St Agnes College students stage silent protest

Media Release

Mangaluru, Aug 19: The Students Council of St Agnes College organised a silent protest in solidarity on August 19, in response to the recent rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Around 2,000 students and faculty members from St Agnes Institutions participated in the silent march. The procession began at the main gate of the college and proceeded through Mallikatte Circle, Mallikatte Market, and Shivbagh Main Junction before returning to the campus.

Participants gathered at the open-air stage where they observed a one-minute silence and paid tribute to the deceased doctor.

Shobha Jacintha D'Souza, a member of the Woman and Child Welfare Committee, addressed the gathering. She encouraged participants to use their critical thinking to make ethical choices and bring about societal change.

D'Souza emphasised the importance of practicing moral values, respecting oneself and others, and maintaining purity in thoughts.

A street play performed by NSS students focused on the issue of sexual harassment against women.

The Kadri Police Station team, including PI Somashekar and SP Umesh, provided essential support to manage traffic and maintain order during the silent protest.

St . Agnes I'm with you. Such silent protests and candle marches have happened many times before, whenever there was a rape or murder. However, these events only last for a few days, and slowly people forget about the incident. If the rapist were to be hanged or shot immediately, it would be better. But in India, that doesn’t happen. In the end, the rapist is often acquitted due to a lack of evidence.
