Mangaluru, Aug 20: Mount Carmel Central School celebrated 'Konkani Manyata Divas 2024' on Tuesday, August 20, at its campus in Mary Hill.
During the event, Praveen Tauro, marketing manager of Daijiworld media, expressed his happiness at seeing young children embrace Konkani culture. He said, "Today, I am delighted to see young children embracing our Konkani culture. I wish everyone a Happy Konkani Manyata Divas. In India, we speak hundreds of languages, but only a few are recognized as official languages. Konkani became the 18th official language of India and was included in the 8th Schedule of our Constitution. People of all religions speak Konkani, with most speakers in Goa, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Kerala. Konkani is spoken as a first language by 42 communities, with five different scripts. My grandfather taught Konkani to my father, and I learned it from him, but the younger generation no longer speaks or understands Konkani. We must ensure that we pass on our tradition to our children."
He further highlighted the efforts of Daijiworld TV in promoting Konkani culture through prime-time programmes, adding, "Daijiworld TV has been organizing Konkani programmes during prime time to help people learn our culture, tradition, and language. Konkani has a rich history, with ancient scripts engraved on pillars revealing its origins. The Karnataka State has established a Konkani Academy, and we have made significant contributions to the field of music. We must teach our children to read and write Konkani. George Fernandes, our former defence minister, was a proud Konkani speaker. Although we learn English in schools, we should also strive to learn and preserve our Konkani language."
Sr Mellissa, the principal of Mount Carmel Central School, also spoke on the occasion, saying, "Our chief guest Praveen Tauro has explained the importance of the Konkani language. Today, our students showcased our Konkani tradition through dance and music. We should cherish this language and support all Konkani associations. Many individuals have contributed significantly to the Konkani language through their service in these associations. The recognition of Konkani as one of India's official languages is a source of great joy for us."
Sr Carissima, administrator of Mount Carmel Central School, along with teachers, students, and others, were present.
