Panaji: Brother's gift of life makes Raksha Bandhan extra special for sister

Panaji, Aug 21: This year’s Raksha Bandhan held a profound significance for a 43-year-old woman from South Goa, as her younger brother gave her the ultimate gift—a new lease on life by donating his kidney.

The woman, who had been battling polycystic kidney disease, underwent a successful kidney transplant in April at a private hospital, with her 35-year-old brother stepping in as the donor.

Although the family has chosen to keep their identities private, their story has become a powerful inspiration for organ donation.

"My wife was overwhelmed with emotion as she tied the rakhi to her brother.

They have shared a close bond since childhood," the woman’s husband shared.

According to a nephrologist from the hospital, the woman’s condition had deteriorated to the point where an immediate transplant was necessary.

Her younger brother, already married, didn’t hesitate to come forward as a donor. After undergoing treatment for kidney stones and securing the required permissions, the transplant was successfully carried out using a laparoscopic kidney donation procedure.
