Udupi: Violent sea conditions halt fishing operations

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Aug 24: Violent winds in the deep sea, which have been blowing since Wednesday, continued through Friday, preventing fishing boats from venturing out in the districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada.

The strong winds, blowing from south to north, coupled with high water pressure, have made deep-sea fishing impossible. As a result, purse seine and 370 small trawl boats have been anchored in their respective fishing ports, while boats that were already at sea have sought shelter in nearby ports.

Many boats from Malpe port have docked at Karwar port, and purse seine boats from Mangaluru have anchored at Malpe port, according to Subhash Mendon, president of the Deep Sea Fishermen’s Association.

The inclement weather at the start of the new fishing season has dampened the spirits of the fishing community. However, they remain hopeful that conditions will improve in a day or two, allowing them to resume their activities.

Best they dont enter sea at all. All good fish they catch is exported and the locals get nothing. The fish belongs to everyone and the fishermen must be allowed to export only a certain amount and the rest should be sold locally.
