Mangaluru: Monsoon intensity reduces in coastal region

Mangaluru, Aug 28: The intensity of monsoon rains in the coastal region has reduced over the past two weeks, with rainfall now limited to specific local areas in the twin districts. Weather experts indicate that this is a sign of the monsoon season coming to an end for this year.

This year's monsoon season has been notably shorter, with some areas experiencing rain while others have sunshine. In certain villages, one part may see heavy rain while another enjoys clear skies. Weather experts attribute these localized showers to significant changes in the weather patterns.

Currently, coastal Karnataka is receiving minimal rainfall due to low-pressure systems over Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Additionally, signs of low pressure in the Arabian Sea on August 28 are expected to further weaken the monsoon. Following this, the rains will likely become sporadic, and the monsoon is predicted to cease completely, according to weather expert Saishekhar.

The monsoon entered Karnataka in June this year, with the Somalian Waves bringing rain until July 15. From then until August 15, monsoon rains continued, but since then, only localized showers accompanied by thunder have been observed.

If the monsoon weakens earlier than usual this year, occasional rains may still occur due to cyclones and low-pressure systems in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. These changes are also reflected in varying sunshine and temperatures.

Weather experts explain that the weather is now changing every 40 kilometres, a phenomenon known as the localized effect. In areas with higher moisture levels, clouds form more readily, leading to rainfall, while nearby regions with less moisture remain dry.
