Mangaluru: Ullal Municipal Council elects new president, vice-president

Mangaluru, Aug 29: The Ullal Municipal Council held its elections for the posts of president and vice-president on Thursday. Congress candidate Shashikala was elected president, and Sapna Harish, also from Congress, was chosen as vice-president.

In the election for president, Shashikala of Congress contested against Bhavani from BJP. For the vice-oresident position, Congress's Sapna Harish stood against Namita from BJP and Zarina Rauf from SDPI.

Shashikala secured 23 votes for president, while Bhavani from BJP garnered 6 votes. Two votes were neutral. In the vice-president race, Sapna Harish obtained 17 votes, Zarina Rauf from SDPI received 6 votes, while Namita from BJP also secured 6 votes, with two JD(S) councilors remaining neutral.

With 23 votes, Shashikala was elected president, and Sapna Harish, with 17 votes, was elected vice-president.

Of the total 31 seats in the Ullal Municipal Council, Congress holds 13, BJP has 6, JD(S) has 4, SDPI has 6, and there are 2 independent members. Notably, three out of the four JD(S) members resigned, with two joining Congress.

Assistant Commissioner Harshavardhan served as the election officer. The reservation for the president's post was designated for SC, and the vice-president's position was reserved for a woman from the backward classes.

The term for the president and vice-president elected in the first phase of the Ullal Municipal Council concluded in May 2023.
