Mangaluru, Sep 2: With one month left in the monsoon season, the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have already received more rain than usual for this period.
From June to September, the coastal belt of Karnataka typically experiences monsoon rains, with an average of 3101 mm during this time. However, as of September 1, the twin districts have received 3327 mm of rain, marking an 18% increase. Specifically, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts have received 7%, 8%, and 31% more rain than usual, respectively. This is the first time since 2020 that the coastal region has experienced above-average rainfall during the monsoon season.
The monsoon, which entered Kerala on May 30, reached coastal Karnataka on June 2. However, both districts saw below-average rainfall until mid-June. It wasn’t until late July through the end of August that heavy rains began to fall in the twin districts.
In Dakshina Kannada, the taluk-wise rainfall percentages are as follows: Beltangady saw a 9% increase, Bantwal 2%, Mangaluru 4%, Sullia 17%, Moodbidri 14%, Kadaba 4%, and Ullal 2%. Mulky received average rainfall, while Puttur experienced a 7% deficit.
In Udupi, all taluks except Hebri, which saw a 10% decrease, received more rain than usual. Karkala had a 2% increase, Kundapur 41%, Udupi 9%, Byndoor 16%, Brahmavar 14%, and Kaup 8% excess rainfall.
