Paris, Sep 2: Indian athletes Nishad Kumar and Yogesh Kathuniya have both delivered impressive performances at the Paralympics in Paris.
Nishad Kumar clinched his second consecutive silver medal in the men’s High Jump T47 category, achieving a season's best height of 2.04 meters. Kumar, from Una in Himachal Pradesh, had previously won silver in the Tokyo Paralympics with a jump of 2.06 meters.
The T47 classification is for athletes with below elbow or wrist amputation or impairment. This silver is India's third medal in para-athletics and the seventh overall at the Paris Games. The gold medal was won by Townsend Roderick of the United States, who cleared 2.12 meters.
Earlier on the same day, Preethi Pal made history by becoming the first Indian woman track and field athlete to win two medals at the Paralympics. She secured bronze in the 200m T35 category with a personal best time of 30.01 seconds. At 23, Preethi is only the second Indian woman to win two medals—both bronze—in a single Paralympics, following shooter Avani Lekhara's achievements in Tokyo.
In the men's discus throw F-56 event, Yogesh Kathuniya earned his second consecutive silver medal with a season's best throw of 42.22 meters.
Kathuniya, who had previously won silver at the Tokyo Paralympics, delivered his podium-clinching distance on his first attempt. Brazil’s Claudiney Batista dos Santos took gold with a new Games record of 46.86 meters, achieved on his fifth attempt. Greece’s Konstantinos Tzounis won bronze with a throw of 41.32 meters.
Kathuniya, who developed Guillain-Barre syndrome at age 9, overcame significant physical challenges with his mother’s support, who learned physiotherapy to help him regain strength.
A commerce graduate from Delhi's Kirori Mal College, Kathuniya now boasts two Paralympic silver medals and three world championship medals. Despite his silver medal performance on Monday, he fell short of his Tokyo effort of 44.38 meters. Dos Santos, a three-time world champion, set new Paralympic records twice during the event, further cementing his dominance in the sport.
