Canberra Konkan Community celebrates Monthi Fest

Media Release

Canberra, Sep 9: The Canberra Konkan Community (CKC) gathered today to celebrate Monthi Fest (Nativity of Mother Mary on Sep 8), a significant festival for Mangalorean Catholics. The event featured a beautiful Mass by Fr Rembert and Msgr Alfred Rayan D’Souza, highlighted by Konkani hymns, adding a touch of cultural authenticity to the service.

In a heartwarming display of intergenerational participation, children took on important roles, reading both the first and second readings, as well as leading the prayer of the faithful.

After the Mass, the celebration continued with a small procession towards the Colin Hall. In a touching gesture that honoured tradition and seniority, the eldest member of the community was given the honor of installing the statue of Mother Mary. This was followed by a veneration ceremony in which both adults and children participated, symbolizing the community's collective devotion.

Following the spiritual observances, attendees enjoyed a traditional Mangalurean feast. The meal, served on banana leaves in keeping with custom, featured a variety of delicious local dishes, enhancing the cultural experience of the festival. The community also savoured a traditional dessert, adding a sweet touch to the celebratory meal.

The festivities concluded with cultural activities, providing an opportunity for community members to showcase their talents and further celebrate their shared heritage.

This celebration seamlessly blended religious devotion with cultural traditions, creating a memorable event for all participants. From the mass to the procession, from the communal meal to the cultural performances, the Monthi Fest celebration exemplified the rich tapestry of Mangalurean catholic culture and the strong sense of community among its members.
