Mangaluru: Speeding car crashes into electricity pole, uproots six others

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Sep 13: An electricity pole was damaged, and six poles were uprooted near Ekkaru Bantara Bhavana on the Bajpe-Kateel state highway 67 in Ekkaru town late in the night on Wednesday. Mescom incurred a loss of Rs 1.10 lac in the mishap.

Electricity and HT cables had fallen on the road as the poles were damaged. Mescom lineman Guru Bhat immediately disconnected the power supply and saved three youths who were in the car. He also removed the fallen electricity wires from the road, ensuring the smooth flow of traffic. However, around 3 am, another electricity pole fell across the road near Ekkaru Bhajana Mandir, posing a potential hazard. Guru Bhat returned to the scene, and along with fellow lineman Ramesh Shetty, they removed the fallen electricity cables and poles from the road.

Local youths, Lekhan and Chinnu, assisted the Mescom linesmen throughout the early morning, warning vehicle riders and drivers of the danger. Despite their efforts, two or three two-wheeler riders fell as they could not see the fallen wires. The public appreciated the work of the Mescom linesmen and the local youths.

Every paisa of the loss incurred by Mecom should be recovered from the owner of the vehicle and the driver. The stretch of road between Bajpe and Kateel that passes through Permude and Yekkar is full of so many curves that it is pretty dangerous to drive at a normal speed itself. If half a dozen electric poles have been uprooted, one can imagine at what speed this guy was driving. He should be awarded an exemplary punishment.

The alarming issue of speeding cars on NH66 and across our district, which is posing a serious threat to the safety of everyone on the road. On the 8th of September, my car was hit by a speeding vehicle on NH66, traveling at an excessive speed of 140 km/h, as confirmed by the highway police. Due to the impact, my car fell into a nearby trench, causing damage to the vehicle. Alhamdulillah, by God's grace, my family and I were fortunate to escape with only minor injuries. However, it could have been much worse. Speeding not only puts the drivers' lives in danger but also endangers the lives of innocent people. We cannot afford to let reckless drivers continue to jeopardize the safety of others. I strongly urge the authorities to take immediate action against such speeding cars and enforce stricter regulations to ensure that the roads are safer for everyone. Let's prioritize road safety and protect lives.
