Mangaluru, Sep 16: The inmates of the district prison in the city have developed a small nursery, and the plants are now being sold. This initiative promotes self-reliance among the inmates.
Criminals are sentenced to many years in prison, but once they are released, they have to reintegrate into society. In light of this, the district prison authorities initiated a special project that also generates income for the state.
Various skills are being taught to the prisoners at the district prison in Mangaluru. District prison officer Obleshappa, recognizing the agricultural background of some inmates, decided to teach them how to grow plants. Sixteen prisoners began by planting decorative plants. The deputy commissioner (DC) appreciated the initiative and recommended making provisions for sales to generate revenue for the government.
Encouraged by the DC’s support, Obleshappa trained 30 prisoners with agricultural backgrounds. The inmates grew various decorative plants, including crotons, jasmine, and Royal Palm, in a nursery-style setting. A space outside the prison has been designated for plant sales, with banners providing information about the plants.
The plants are in high demand, and city residents have responded positively. Overall, the prison authorities' efforts to lay the foundation for a self-reliant future for inmates when they return to society have been widely appreciated.
