UAE, Sep 17: The Ami Sasthangar family, comprising Sastan parishioners residing in the UAE, came together to celebrate the traditional Monthi Festh, a beloved harvest festival for Canara Catholics worldwide. Held at the Viva Goa venue, the event marked the Nativity of Mother Mary and was a vibrant display of cultural heritage and religious devotion.

The celebration commenced with a warm welcome by group leader Christopher Fernandes. The event was skillfully hosted by the lively compering duo Frew Menezes and Ria Lewis, who engaged the audience throughout the day.

A spiritual atmosphere was set as prayers were led by Prashant Lewis and his team, followed by the traditional flower-showering ceremony to honour Mother Mary. Participants then enjoyed the ceremonial serving of milk with ‘Novem’ (new crop), symbolizing the gratitude for the season’s harvest.

After a brief refreshment break, the event transitioned into an entertainment session. The lively activities included a quiz on the life of Mother Mary, a ‘best traditionally dressed’ competition for children, men, women, and families, as well as a ‘guess the song’ game. Solo and group performances of songs and dances added to the festive spirit. Winners of various competitions were awarded prizes, adding excitement to the gathering.

A community meal, catered by the renowned Shetty Lunch Home, followed a solemn grace, with attendees enjoying a spread of traditional and contemporary dishes. The event also looked toward the future, as Sharmila, Terence, and Aldrin led a discussion on upcoming programs, inviting suggestions from the community.

Stephen Rodrigues concluded the event with a vote of thanks, acknowledging the collective efforts behind the celebration's success. Contributions from several community members ensured the smooth execution of the event, including flowers for the Mother Mary ceremony by Chester D'Souza and family, refreshments by Prashant Lewis, and prizes sponsored by James and Luella Rodrigues, Terence and Sharmila Lewis, and Joslin and Joel.

The Monthi Festh celebration not only honored religious and cultural traditions but also reinforced a sense of unity among expatriates, fostering strong community bonds and leaving attendees with cherished memories.
