Udupi, Sep 18: Harshvardhan, a BA culinary Arts student from WGSHA, has made history by securing a "Medallion of Excellence in the Cooking Category" at the 47th WorldSkills Competition held from September 10 to 15, at EUREXPO Lyon, France. This achievement marks a significant milestone, as it's the first time India has received this honour in culinary skills.
The competition featured 1,400 participants from over 70 countries, all vying to showcase their skills and inspire young talent in vocational training. India had a strong representation, participating with 60 competitors across 52 skills and returning home with three Bronze Medals and 12 Medallions of Excellence.
Harshvardhan's success is the result of three months of intensive training focused on mastering various culinary disciplines, including Hot Kitchen, Cold Kitchen, and Buffet Presentations. His preparation also included participation in a friendly competition in Switzerland, which provided invaluable international exposure.
Dr (Chef) K Thirugnanasambantham, principal of WGSHA, served as Harshvardhan's mentor throughout this journey. Chef K Thiru praised Harshvardhan’s determination and resilience, stating, "This achievement showcases his confidence and potential to positively impact the culinary world." He added, "This is the first time India has won a medallion in the culinary skills category. Our next aim is for the gold medal."
Reflecting on the achievement, Chef K Thiru emphasised the need for more platforms to nurture young talent in India, particularly in rural areas. He also expressed gratitude to his colleagues Chef Nitish, Chef Manish, Chef Daya, and WGSHA alumna Chef Nandheetha for their support in preparing Harshvardhan.
Lt Gen (Dr) M D Venkatesh, vice-chancellor of MAHE, commended Harshvardhan's dedication, stating, "Harshvardhan’s achievement on the global stage is truly commendable. It reflects his dedication and skill and highlights the standard of excellence that WGSHA and MAHE continue to uphold."
Sanjay Bose, executive vice-president of HR at ITC Hotels, remarked, "WGSHA has once again showcased its excellence in culinary skills. Chef K Thiru’s expertise and passion have touched many young minds, and I am confident that Harshvardhan will bring more laurels to our country."
WorldSkills is not just about winning medals; it’s about building confidence, empowering communities, and driving economic growth. Harshvardhan’s achievement is a source of inspiration for aspiring young chefs and demonstrates India’s growing prowess in the global culinary scene.
In a statement to the media, Harshvardhan expressed his heartfelt gratitude for Chef K Thiru and the entire WGSHA and MAHE leadership team, saying, "It was the hard work of my guru Chef K Thiru and the entire team for what I have achieved today."
