Karnataka Yakshagana Academy holds Yakshagana workshop, show in Bahrain

Bahrain, Sep 25: The Karnataka Yakshagana Academy, in collaboration with the Bahrain Kannada Sangha, recently organized a workshop on makeup and costumes at Kannada Bhavana in Manama, Bahrain, on September 20.

The demonstration was inaugurated by Amaranath Alva, president of Bahrain Kannada Sangha. In his speech, he mentioned that Yakshagana is a great art form from coastal Karnataka with admirers beyond borders. The Kannada association of Bahrain has been supporting Yakshagana for 47 years since its inception.

Dr Tallur Shivarama Shetty, chairman of the Yakshagana Bayalata Academy, participated virtually and delivered his presidential remarks. He expressed his appreciation for the Bahrain Kannada Sangha's efforts in promoting Yakshagana in the island country. Dr Shetty also proposed organizing a Yakshagana conference in Bahrain with the support of Yakshagana associations in Gulf countries.

Prithviraj Kavathar, a member of the Karnataka Yakshagana Academy and Assistant professor of centre for Kannada and regional languages, MAHE, Manipal, emphasized that language and art are two aspects that bring people together. He described Yakshagana as a vibrant art form, not only with its gorgeous costumes, colourful makeup, and intelligent dialogues, but also for its inclusive nature.

Ramaprasad Ammenadka, secretary of the Bahrain Kannada Sangha, provided the keynote address and facilitated the event.

Deepak Rao Pejavara, chief yakshagana instructor in Bahrain Yakshopasa Adhyayana Kendra, coordinated the workshop. He elaborated the meanings of colours in the costume of make-up on Yakshagana. Mohan Edaneer, Akshaya Marnad, and Rahul Kudlaare were the resource persons of the workshop.

The story of Srinivasa Kalayanothsav was staged as part of annual Yakshagana festival of Bahrain Kannada Sangha. The narrative for Srinivasa Kalyanotsavam was edited and scripted by Prithviraj Kavathar and directed by Deepak Rao Pejavar.

Ramprasad Ammenadka, Mohan Edaneer, Akshay Marnad, Roshan S Kotyan, Rahul Shetty Kudla, Sampath Shetty Belady, Jeevithesh Poonja, Bhaskar Acharya, Divyaraj Rai, Pushparaj Shetty, Karunakar Padmashali, Jagadeesh Babu Jeppu, Kiran Poojary, Sathish Malpe, Ganesh Kateel, Hemachandra Salyan, Kavitha Suresh, Vishwas Bhat Karbet, Poornima Jagadeesh, Santhosh Acharya, Rajshankar Shetty, Reshma Gopal Shetty, Jhancy Shekhar, Sunil Poojary, Rajesh Shettigar, Sathish Kolya, Shobha Ramprasad, Rajesh Mavinakatte, Sachin Patali, Hithin Poojary, Namitha Saliyan, Akhaya Rajesh, Laxminarayana, Sanath Sampath, Dhanwi Ramprasad, Abhijna Suresh Siddhanakere, Mahaswin Rao Pejavara, Riya Hemanth Saliyan, and Sahana Sampath actively participated in the performance.
