Mangaluru, Oct 2: The body of Sumith (20), a resident of Kottara Chowki, who drowned in the Phalguni River near the Maravoor railway bridge on September 29, was recovered on October 1 after an extensive search operation.
Sumith, along with Aneesh (19) from Urva Store, was swept away by the river's current while swimming with two other friends, Arun (19) and Deekshith (18), near the bridge. The group had gone for a swim on Sunday, September 29 when the incident occurred. The body of Aneesh was recovered on September 30 by diving experts from Bengre, but the search for Sumith continued until Tuesday.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and fire service personnel, along with diving experts, were involved in the search operations. Bajpe police inspector Sandeep G S and his team were also present at the site, coordinating the efforts.
Locals have expressed concern as many youths frequently swim in the river, ignoring warnings from residents about the dangers. Despite several incidents, the area continues to attract swimmers, especially on holidays.
Sumith worked as a mechanic in a garage in Kottara, while Aneesh was employed at a soda factory. Both families have been left devastated by the tragedy.
